The tear-jerking line works best when it's specific and quiet: 'You've been my emergency contact for fifteen years. I'm so glad you finally have a better one.' The room cries at true and small, not grand and vague.
What to leave out
- •Exes, old flames, the 'wild years', even as a joke.
- •Anything about the wedding's cost, planning drama, or family tension.
- •Inside jokes that need explaining, translate them or cut them.
- •Your own relationship with a partner (this trap catches many speeches).
