How to write a best man speech (that actually lands)

The only structure you need

Every best man speech that works follows roughly the same skeleton, and there's no shame in using it, the room doesn't want experimental structure, it wants to laugh and then feel something. The skeleton: a hook that isn't 'for those who don't know me', one great story about the groom, the turn where the story reveals something true about him, a short tribute to the couple, and a toast.

Notice what's not in there: a chronology of your friendship, five mediocre stories instead of one great one, or anything about his exes. One story, told well, beats everything.

Pick the story first, everything else follows

Don't start writing sentences. Start by choosing the single story that best captures who the groom actually is. The test: does the story end with the room understanding him better? Embarrassing is fine, pointless embarrassment isn't. The camping trip where everything went wrong works if it shows he stays calm when everything goes wrong. It fails if the punchline is just that he fell in a river.

Once you have the story, the speech nearly writes itself: open with a line that sets up the story, tell it with specifics (place, dialogue, the detail only you know), then pivot: 'And that's the thing about Daniel...', that pivot sentence is where the laughter earns the sincerity.

The rules of funny

You're not doing stand-up; you're telling stories to a room that already loves the subject. That's the easiest comedy gig on earth, so don't force it.

• •Punch at the groom, never at the couple, and land on his good qualities.
• •Nothing about exes, money, or anything the grandmother shouldn't hear.
• •Inside jokes fail in rooms of 100. If it needs backstory, cut it or give the backstory in one sentence.
• •If a joke feels 50/50, it's a no. The confident cut is invisible; the bombed joke isn't.

Length and delivery

Three to five minutes, 400 to 650 words. Past five minutes, even great material starts losing the room. Write for a slow pace (about 130 words per minute); nerves will speed you up automatically.

Read it aloud twice the night before: once for the words, once for the pauses. Mark where you'll breathe. At the venue: one drink maximum before speaking, phone on airplane mode if you're reading from it, look up at the end of sentences, and when you land the emotional line, stop. Let it sit. The silence is doing the work.

If the wedding is this weekend

You're not behind, most best man speeches are written within 72 hours of the wedding.
